Biography
State: a community or area . State, of mind. State: the condition of someone or something at a particular time. State: to express definitely or clearly in speech or writing.
Express: to convey a thought or feeling in words or by gestures and conduct. Express: operating at high speed. Express: denoting a service in which deliveries are made by a special messenger.
If life is the message, then Australian band State Express are the messengers. But let's back-track one second and get in to what makes this band tick.
Roots music, rock music, soul music, rhythm & blues.
There's a lot of history packed into State Express' sound, yet far from being any kind of traditional band, this sound is modern, and these songs are personal and distinctly contemporary. Formed at the end of 2005 in Melbourne, Australia, the band combine the soulful raw vocals and bluesy rhythmic guitar of front-man Jemi White and the dramatic, solid-as-a-country-Kingswood rhythm section of bassist Paul Young and drummer/percussionist Gareth Morley.
Live, this band are never less than inspiring, rousing, moving. At their best, they'll move you to tears, and to dance, in the length and breadth of one song. Struggle against adversity, poverty, youth suicide prevention, community, friendship, self-esteem, education and caring for kids, the feeling of belonging, living in the moment, and of course, love sweet love, are just a few of the themes expressed through the 28 minute roller-coaster ride that is State Express' debut mini-album, “First Light”.
With this their first record, State Express has laid down the first steps of what we expect to be an important musical legacy in years to come. Keep an eye on these guys, and an ear to their tracks.
State Express will officially release their debut mini-LP in April 2007 on Coaster Soul Records. A national release is slated for late 2007. |

When I lived back in Italy as a kid, we'd put on tapes and crank 'em, prance around like idiots. Guns & Roses were a big thing in those early days, Sweet Child Of Mine, all of that. Through my youth, I soaked up a lot of influence from artists such as Van Morrison, Ben Harper, Jeff Buckley and Bob Marley. They were the largest.
My life's been fairly well traveled. I was born in Australia, raised in the Italian countryside, I traveled a lot through Europe and briefly through the US before settling my roots down in Melbourne, Australia.
A combined love of community building and music making is my life-blood and passion.
